Baltic Wine Competition 2022

For quality wines!

The competition is organised by the Latvian Association of Winegrowers and Winemakers (hereinafter — the Association) in cooperation with the Estonian Small Brewer's Assotiation and the Lithuanian National Winemakers Association.

The aim of the competition is to identify and evaluate the quality of wine produced from local fruit, berries (including grapes) and other raw materials used in the production of wine, inform stakeholders and facilitate quality growth of winegrowers within the Baltic region.

1. Participants. Winemakers from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia who shall submit wine samples according to the competition regulations of commercial wines (licensed producers) or wines made for personal consumption and pay the participation fee. The participant agrees that the results of the competition will be published on the Internet, mentioning the name, surname and result of the winemaker.

 

2. Participation fee

EUR 25.00 for one wine sample if application form is submitted and fee is paid to association’s account until 06.09.2022

One participant shall submit no more than 10 samples. If a participant has applied for a competition and paid money to the association's account but has not submitted samples for some reason, the paid amount will not be refunded.

 

3. Apply for competition, wine sample submission

3.1 Apply for the competition and submit wine application form via Google forms link  (see Annex No.1) to the Association by  05.09.2022.   

3.2 The wine samples shall be submitted on 09.09.2022, from 11:00 to 17:00 at Mazburkas Winery at "Mazburkas", Smārdes pagasts, Tukuma novads, LV-3129, Latvia. Contact person: Gunta Niedra, phone +371 29149725.

No samples for the competition shall be accepted after the deadline! Participant should take care of submitting of wine samples in right address and timing

 

3.3 The participation fee shall be transferred to the Association’s bank account untill 06.09.2022  (with reference: Baltic Cup 2021, for ... samples).

3.4 Wine evaluation will take place from 13.09.2022 to 14.09.2022 under the canopies on the terrace in accordance with Latvian legislation.

3.5 The location and time of the closing event (announcing of results, award ceremony, tasting of submitted wine samples) shall be announced after the receipt of sample submissions to the participants.

4. Wine sample grouping

The wines shall be evaluated in two main groups: grape wines and fruit and berry wines.

Grape wines shall be divided into 3 groups and subgroups:

·       white wine: dry, semi-dry/semi-sweet, dessert

·       red wine: dry, semi-dry/semi-sweet, dessert

·       sparkling wine — only which have been produced with natural secondary fermentation

Fruit and berry wine — in 7 groups and subgroups:

 

·       white wine: dry, semi-dry/semi-sweet, dessert

·       red wine: dry, semi-dry/semi-sweet, dessert

·       sparkling fruit and berry wine — only which have been produced with natural secondary fermentation

·       sparkling fruit and berry wine —carbonation method

·       cider — still and traditional method

·       cider — carbonation method

·       exotic wine (flower, birch sap and other wines which are not produced from berries, fruit or rhubarb, including any aromatised wines with spices)

 

Amber and amber brown wines shall be added to the white wine group; whereas rosé shall, according to the applicant’s consideration, be deemed red wine if the desirable serving temperature is room temperature or white wine if the wine is to be served chilled.

 

The applicant may submit only the wines which have not been fortified with additional alcohol.

 

5. Wine sampling labelling

For the submission, the samples must be filled in 0.75 l bottles (other bottle volumes are acceptable if the total volume submitted is no less than 0.75 l, for example 2 x 375 ml; 2 x 500 ml; 4 x 200 ml bottles) with corks or twist-off screw caps; the corks/caps must be safe and secured. The wine bottles shall be filled to the top, leaving approx. 2 cm air space between the bottom of the cork and the surface of the wine. The bottle should have white paper label (see example at Annex 2) which is glued on the bottom part of the bottle so that the bottom edge of the label is 2.5 cm from the bottom of the bottle. The label should contain printed information about the wine in English as follows:

·       winemaker

·       group and subgroup (for example, semi-dry white wine, red wine, desert wine, exotic wine)

·       raw material, (also grape variety)

·       alcohol content, if applicable

N.B. At least 85% of raw material should be mentioned

Commercial wine samples shall be prepared according to the requirements of laws and regulations — with labels and excise stamps submitting volume no less than 0.75 l (if the volume of 1 unit is less than 0.75 l, several bottles shall be submitted) and the aforementioned label in English.

 

The sample bottles shall be submitted safely packaged in cardboard boxes which would prevent the bottles from breaking.

The samples, which do not comply with the requirements of the regulations, shall not be evaluated in the competition.

 

 6. Wine evaluation

The jury panel shall be made up of 7 experienced sommeliers, winemakers and experts of wine culture from the Baltic States and other countries. Each country nominates 2 jury persons with at least one sommelier. Main organizer shall nominate one expert from Baltic States in the jury panel. If a member of the Lithuanian, Estonian or Latvian jury is unable to attend the competition due to Covid restrictions or any other justifiable reason, the General organizer may appoint another jury member or reduce the number of jury members. The minimum number of jury members is at least four.

The jury has the right to transfer the submitted wine sample to a different competition category if the information of the sample regarding the group and subgroup of the wine is conflicting.

The jury shall be informed about the raw materials of fruit, berry wines and variety of grape wine.

The jury shall evaluate the wines in silence and they are not entitled to ask for any additional information or any other questions regarding the specific sample.

The wines shall be evaluated from 1 to 10 according to 4 criteria each of which has an assigned coefficient. The maximum number of points is 200.

The total score of each submitted sample shall be calculated without taking into account the highest and the lowest evaluation of the sample.

The wine sample will not be evaluated in case of cork taint (TCA or TBA) at the sample. For this at least 50% of jury should agree on cork taint present existence.

7. Awards

Wines from licensed wineries and wines made for personal consumption shall be awarded without dividing them into separate groups. The wines shall be nominated in each of the referred wine groups and subgroups.

 

Rules:

·       3 best samples shall be awarded if the number of samples in one nomination exceeds 10,

·       The best sample (one) shall be awarded if the number of samples in one nomination is 3 to 9,

·       Wine shall not be awarded if the sample does not reach 50% of the points from the maximum amount.

 

Big award for grape wines — 3 wines which will have the highest total score among grape wines shall be awarded.

Big award for fruit and berry wines — 3 wines which will have the highest total score among fruit and berry wines shall be awarded.

 

If the Baltic Cup award is used by the winemaker for marketing purposes, it is restricted to the use only for the awarded batch of beverage.
